There are differences between watercolor and pencil paintings, even though some might look the same. The main one is the material. I use fine Strathmore Bristol paper and wax or oil pencils. If you like the fine deliberate, detail in a portrait, it is more likely to happen with pencil and the artist, yours truly, spends much more time on them. Watercolors are a dance and they sometimes paint themselves! I often use watercolor pencils for detail for those. Both have qualities of their own. I have a helpful protocol page with a checklist of how best to order your painting and photograph your pet.
